Students Explain Why They Care About the Environment (Video)

One of the big takeaways from SxSW Eco for me was the importance of getting kids to understand and care about the environment. This topic came up in a number of panels and was a popular idea on Twitter. On one day of the conference, a group of students from the The Khabele School in Austin attended to learn about environmental issues and hear keynote speaker Philippe Cousteau. I was curious to hear why these students cared about the environment and what they wished parents, politicians and adults in power would do about environmental issues. Here's what a few of them had to say.

Spiral Island Update: TreeHugger TV Visits Rishi Sowa

by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 06.17.10

Back in 2005 Collin reported on Reishee Sowa and his floating island made from a quarter of a million used pop bottles. An admiring Collin wrote "While we aren't sure we'll be able to solve the world's problems by building floating islands from recycled pop bottles, it's the spirit of his work that we like best. He's able to live self-sufficiently in his own version of paradise, and that sounds pretty good to us."

Alas, in 2007 we reported that Reishee lost his island to a hurricane and had to start all over. The pictures we showed looked pretty lame. But it sure doesn't any more.

TreeHugger TV Premieres Tonight!

by Rachel Cernansky, Boulder, Colorado on 04.20.10

TreeHugger TV premiere

TreeHugger was founded almost six years ago by Graham Hill in order to show that "being green" was not just for the stereotypical hippie environmentalist crowd. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) But it could be so much more.

Now, we're pleased to announce that we're expanding our reach even further with the launch of TreeHugger TV!

Ian Yolles, VP Marketing & Brand Communications, says NAU considers its modus operendi to be conducting "business un-usual." At the heart of the company are sustainable practices, and Yolles holds forth with this money quote describing NAU as:

an enterprise designed around... the deep conviction that we share which is that companies have a much broader responsibility to the community than simply the rabid, singular pursuit of profit at the expense of everything else.

THTV: Bill McKibben On 350, Winning Change & Encouraging Signs

by George Spyros, New York City, USA on 10.23.09

Last spring, the day after PowerShift 2009, I caught up with Bill McKibben in NYC. Tired and exhilarated, Bill shared the feeling of having won the victory of shutting down the coal-fired Capitol Power Plant in Washington D.C. Well guess what? The battle against GHG emissions is win-able. As long as we put a plus sign next to the number 350 to add what's missing.
